La nueva Biblioteca Municipal de Villaverde ha de actuar como catalizador del barrio y erigirse como infraestructura y soporte de la política cultural del barrio.
Ha de representar un lugar para el encuentro y las actividades colectivas y ha de estar en sintonía con el barrio.
Se plantea un nuevo modelo de Biblioteca con una clara función social y de apoyo a la autoaprendizaje y la formación y será un aliado de la igualdad.

Sustentada en los principios de flexibilidad espacial y de uso, accesibilidad y de vínculo estrecho con los espacios exteriores, se plantea un edificio compacto con una distinción clara entre la zona de jóvenes y la de adultos, materializada en dos volúmenes diferenciados y articulados por un acceso central por la calle Miguel Rosales. Ambos volúmenes se abren a sendas plazas y quedan activados por el plano de cubierta, la cual se concibe como una zona estancial capaz de albergar distintos usos ligados a la representación y el descanso, al tiempo que resolver la integración del equipamiento de las instalaciones.

El programa dotacional se articula en base al concepto tipificado por Adolf Loos como Raumplan o planta espacial, en donde los espacios se suceden de forma fluida a través de rampas y plataformas, y generando un recorrido en espiral que culmina en la cubierta – graderío abierta al cielo.

Se plantea una volumetría compacta que busca tener la presencia urbana rotunda, clara y que sirva de transición entre las escalas mencionadas.
La cualificación entre biblioteca de jóvenes y la de adultos se expresa en la envolvente de fachada ventilada con listones cerámicos, cuyo distinta color y graduación expresan también el carácter lúdico y fluctuante, activado por la iluminación interior.

Se concibe también una Biblioteca jardín con una masa vegetal presente en las dos plazas vinculadas a la zona juvenil y de adultos y en la fachada sur y norte del proyecto, en la cual se integran unas franjas de plantación lineal en el nivel del sótano.
La vegetación aparece también en la cubierta, desempeñando también un papel bioclimático.

Se plantea una fachada ventilada con un revestimiento de listones cerámicos que actúa como piel polícroma, vibrante y capaz de activarse con la luz.
A partir de los colores base rojo y azul que distinguen los distintos volúmenes de la zona juvenil y de adultos, se propone una gradación de tonos y colores (pudiéndose retro iluminarse) y superpuestos a una base neutra.
Se persigue una impresión visual de oscilación, de casi desmaterialización y que parece variar con el movimiento del observador.
Esta solución de fachada ventilada con los listones cerámicos, fijados a una subestructura de soporte y sobre un aislamiento térmico exterior a la hoja de cerramiento portante, constituye una solución viable económicamente, con un alto grado de comportamiento energético y que continua con la tradición de cerramientos cerámicos que caracteriza el desarrollo de barrios como el de Villaverde.
Una piel cerámica eso si, vibrante, cambiante y ligera.

The new municipal library in the Villaverde neighbourhood of Madrid plays a special role as a catalyst for local life and an element of infrastructure, while also acting as a platform for local cultural policy.
The building needs to be both a meeting place and a location for collective activities, while also working in step with the neighbourhood.

The project provides a new library model that plays a clear social role, supporting learning and training and promoting equality.

Based on the principle of flexibility in terms of space and use, accessibility, and maintaining a close connection with outside spaces, we have created a compact building that makes a clear distinction between the spaces for youth and adult activities. That distinction is demonstrated through the two separate structures that share a central access point via Calle Miguel Rosales. The two structures open out into two separate squares and culminate with the roof space, which is designed as a multi-purpose area for both performance and rest, while also providing a solution for the facility’s infrastructure services.
The public funding requirements are conveyed using Adolf Loos’s Raumplan concept, where spaces flow into each other via ramps and platforms, creating a spiral journey that culminates in the open roof-terrace.
Shapes are compact in a quest for an emphatic and clear urban presence, acting as a transition between the aforementioned scales.
The difference between the youth and adult libraries is expressed through the surrounding ventilated facade comprising ceramic panels, whose different colours and gradings also convey the playful and shifting nature of the building, further highlighted by the internal lighting.

The design also includes a garden library with greenery in the two squares next to the youth and adult areas, and on the southern and northern facades. Strips of greenery are also integrated along the basement level, while greenery is also a feature on the roof and plays a bioclimatic role.

The building includes a ventilated facade with a surface made up of ceramic panels that act as a vibrant polychrome light-activated skin.
Using the base colours of red and blue to distinguish between the youth and adult structures, the design provides a grading of tones and colours (with backlighting option) superimposed on a neutral base.
The visual impression pursued is one of oscillation and almost dematerialisation, which seems to change as the observer moves around the structure.
The ventilated facade solution using ceramic panels, fitted on to a supporting substructure and thermal insulation, is a financially viable and energy efficient solution, which also continues with the tradition of using ceramic enclosures in the development of neighbourhoods such as Villaverde.
